Project 1 : Triple Play Trike

Motivation

The primary objective of this project was to create a ride-on toy that evolves alongside a child's motor skills.

The solution was to develop a trike the supported children in 3 stages of development: learning to pedal, learning ride, and learning to balance. To do this, I worked on several mechanisms to allow the pedals to be removed and wheels to be rotated inward.

  1. Triple Play Trike

Priorities

  • Aids children as they transition from 3 wheel to 2 wheel ride-ons

  • Adjustable seat and handlebars to accommodate growth from 2 - 4 years old

  • Ease of adjustability and assembly

Role

  • Developed preliminary mechanisms for rotating wheels, rotating hind legs, removable pedals, and pedal storage.

  • Owned CAD model and BOM for preliminary design

  • Collaborated with Industrial design team to bled design language, consumer experience, and technical considerations.

Mechanism Development: Rotating wheels

To rotate the trike into the foot-to-floor and balance bike mode, I developed a CAM lock mechanism that would lock the back legs in the perfect positions. The CAM lock interfaces with gears on each leg allowing the rotation of both legs to move and lock into the same position.

Mechanism Development: Petal Removal

The pedal mechanism I created would allow the user to remove or install the pedals regardless of the wheel position. This was done using a spring loaded mechanism within the fork of the trike.

Although I left this project at the end of my internship, it has recently launched. You can view the full product here. Although some of the mechanisms have changed, the pedal mechanism has been integrated into the final product!
